RUMOR: MSNBC.COM TO CHANGE NAME

The parent companies of msnbc.com, NBC Universal and Microsoft, are in talks to change the websites name.  There is concern that the website and the cable network, MSNBC, are one in the same and is causing confusion for consumers.  MSNBC and msnbc.com are separate companies and have no affiliation between the two. "Both strategies are fine, but naming them the same thing is brand insanity” said Charlie Tillinghast, president of msnbc.com, in a memo concerning the way news is presented on the website and network.

Under the current plan being discussed, msnbc.com would become the website for the cable channel to promote it's programming.  The current msnbc.com site would move to another domain which is still be discussed. [NYT]
