French mathematician and father of fractals, Benoit Mandelbrot has passed away at the age of 85 from pancreatic cancer. Mandelbrot published The Fractal Geometry of Nature in 1982 which gave rise to fractal art. The image below is one of the most famous examples of fractals. Mandelbrot not only was a mathematical wizard but also was adept in biology, finance and countless other areas.
The New York Times published a touching obituary that not only detailed his professional life, but also touched on his life as a teenage escaping Nazi Germany. [Gizmodo]
