TOYOTA TACKLES THE NURBURGRING TO CAPTURE THE EV SPEED RECORD
Toyota is taking to the Nurburging this week in an effort to capture the electric vehicle speed record. The current record is nine minutes, 1.388 seconds for the 12.9 miles of the Nordschleife course. Toyota's electric vehicle's power comes from two electric motors pushing it to a top speed of 174 MPH (260 kmph). These motors utilize lithium-ceramic batteries to help save weight.
The company hopes breaking the record will show racing fans just how far electric cars have come ,and help remove some of the stodgy plodding stigma, with GM Ludwig Zeller saying, "Many people are still dreaming of an electric future for motorsport; at TMG we believe this is much closer than some think."

NEW PLAYLATER SERVICE IS A DVR FOR ONLINE VIDEOS
The firm behind PlayOn, the popular online video streaming service, announced its new PlayLater service. PlayLater allows users to record streaming video from nearly any website — including popular cable programs such shows from TBS, CBS, Adult Swim, and more — for watching at a later time. Its offline cachine features means you can store the video for watching even when a connection isn’t available, too. It’s exactly like a DVR, which means you can choose what you want the software to record, and simply forget about it until later. PlayLater is supported on PCs, and recorded content can also be watched on mobile devices such as the iPhone or iPad. Early beta users will receive a free one-month trial of PlayLater, after which it will cost $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year.

APPLE POSTS RECORD $26.74 BILLION IN REVENUE
As expected Apple released its fiscal first quarter results and the news was very good. The financial results cover the fiscal first quarter of 2011 which ended on December 25th last year. Revenue was at an all time high with Apple’s highly popular devices and associated App Stores making up the bulk of the $26.74 billion generated. Net quarterly profit was $6 billion.
Compared to the same quarter last year it’s a massive gain. Revenue has increased over $11 billion ($15.68 billion in the year-ago quarter), and profit has increased by $2.62 billion ($3.38 billion in the year-ago quarter).
Steve Jobs is always looking to the future, and simply commented:
We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales. We are firing on all cylinders and we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can’t wait to get their hands on.Here’s a breakdown of the devices Apple sold during the quarter (percentage gains are on the year-ago quarter):
- Mac: 4.13 million (23% increase)
- iPhone: 16.24 million (86% increase)
- iPod: 19.45 million (7% decline)
- iPad: 7.33 million
We also can’t forget the 30% cut Apple takes on every app sale in the App Store, as well as the profit generated from sales of content on iTunes away from apps. With the Mac App Store recently coming online that area of revenue stream will only grow in the future.

NOOK BECOMES BARNES AND NOBLE'S BEST SELLING ITEM OF ALL TIME
The veteran bookseller just announced that the Nook lineup -- 3G, WiFi, and the new Nook Color combined -- has become "the company's biggest bestseller ever in its nearly 40-year history." Unfortunately, we can't say exactly just how many that is, as the press release only announces "millions" being sold. A B&N rep we spoke with told us they likely wouldn't specify any further, nor would there likely be a breakdown of sales by individual model.
Other notable factoids include Nook Color's reign as the company's "number one selling gift of the holiday season" and nearly one million "Nook books" downloaded on Christmas Day. In fact, the company now sells more digital books than it does physical books over BN.com (not brick and mortar stores). [Engadget]

UNIQUE SIKORSKY HELICOPTER BREAKS SPEED RECORD - WITH VIDEO
Sikorsky, the venerable helicopter manufacturer, has just broken the helicopter speed record with its X2 vehicle. This unique helicopter has 2 counter rotating main rotors with a push prop in the rear instead of the usual parallel fan blade. The Sikorsky website description of the helicopter:
The X2 uses a single T800 engine to power both the rotors and the tail-mounted variable-pitch propeller, which provides forward thrust to enable the high speed. Other technologies include fly-by-wire flight controls and active vibration control.
In the beginning of the video you can see the X2 Light Tactical Helicopter being developed for military use. [Gizmodo]
