MICROSOFT SUED FOR PATENT INFRINGEMENT IN KINECT CONTROLLER

Microsoft is being sued for patent infringement over motion-sensing technology used in its blockbuster gaming accessory, the Microsoft Kinect. Ohio-based Impulse Technology has filed a complaint alleging that Microsoft’s Kinect controller infringes on seven of its technology patents. One patent referenced in the lawsuit covers “wide variety of games where the movement of a player is tracked in three dimensions…and certain exercise games where the motion of the player is tracked to effect movement of a virtual avatar, and the exertion of the user is monitored, including where the tracking of the player is done by the use of a camera.” A separate patent describes an “education system challenging a subject’s physiologic and kinesthetic systems to synergistically enhance cognitive function.”

Impulse Technology is seeking a permanent injunction to block the import and sale of Microsoft’s Kinect, and it is also suing Electronic Arts, Konami and Sega for developing Xbox 360 games that utilize Kinect and infringe on its patents. Impulse is seeking damages, treble damages, interest, and attorney fees from Microsoft as well. The Kinect motion-based video game controller has been a smash hit for Microsoft, having set numerous sales records since its launch. This past March, Microsoft announced that it had sold 10 million Kinect controllers since the device’s launch just before the holidays last year.

VOLKSWAGEN BRINGING HANDS-FREE DRIVING TO HIGHWAYS

A new technology proposed by the German automaker won't take you from A to B automatically, but it will help out with more simple driving, so you can take your hands off the wheel while cruising down the highway at up to 130km/h (about 80 mph), for example.

The system pairs Lane Assist with cruise control, and can be overridden by the driver at any time. The Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP) system's Pilot Mode uses radar, laser, camera, and ultrasonic sensors to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, start and stop in traffic, and slow down before a bend. Speed is set by the driver, who you'll need to remain aware of your surroundings in case you need to take over control.

JESSE JACKSON JR. BLAMES iPAD FOR HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT

You know how ebooks are gradually taking over paper books as the most popular format for the consumption of the written word? Well, that's bad, mmkay? Publishers, librarians, and booksellers are losing their jobs and It's all entirely the iPad's fault. Forget the Kindle's millions of sales, the iPad did it. In a technophobic rant to rival all technophobic rants that have come before it, Illinois Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. accuses the iPad's popularity for the current level of unemployment in his nation, before proceeding to sculpt a rickety argument about how the First Amendment to the US Constitution is being exploited for the benefit of China. Check out the spectacle for yourself:

GAMESTOP BUYS IMPULSE AND SPAWN LABS, SAYS IT IS BECOMING "TECHNOLOGY COMPANY"

It looks like GameStop's plans following its acquisition of Impulse and Spawn Labs may be even grander than we had suspected. At an investor conference today, GameStop said flat out that it is "becoming a technology company," and that it does indeed plan to introduce a cloud-based gaming service similar to OnLive as a result of the Spawn Labs acquisition, while Impulse will be used to "compete fiercely" with Steam. But that's just the start of things.

According to the Dallas Morning News, GameStop also plans to expand the gaming service to a variety of mobile devices, and it's apparently even entertaining the idea of a GameStop-branded tablet, saying that "if we feel like we could do a better job of making a tablet, we'll do that." Of course, some of that is still quite a ways off, but GameStop will be taking its first steps fairly soon -- it's already showed off a demo of how the service will be integrated into its website (see above, complete with a "try it now" option), and it plans to begin a public beta sometime this year before rolling out the full service early next year.

BENDABLE DISPLAYS MADE FROM SILK

We have all shuddered at the thought of sitting on our rigid display devices and cracking them in half. Now Taiwanese researchers have found a way to make the display more bendable by using silk. The researchers take what is called liquid silk and turn it into an insulating membrane that is then used to make the TFT, or thin-film transistor, display found in both e-readers and LCD panels.

The advantage of the process is much more resilient e-reader panels. The best part is it is actually cheaper than the current technology for making TFT displays with the component cost for the silk coming in at about three cents per display.

GOOGLE TO LAUNCH 'TEACH PARENTS TECH' SITE

Just in time for the holidays, Google is launching a new site on YouTube...Teach Parents Tech. The name is a bit misleading since it really is a video site for those that need help understanding and using technology. There are currently 54 videos, all less than one minute long. They cover topics from 'cut and paste' and 'how to attach a file to email' to more advanced functions like 'how to setup an email autoresponder'. There is even one to learn how to find cheap flights. All the videos are taught by Google employees and use easy to understand language.

The website TeachParentsTech.org is currently showing "Coming Soon..." and YouTube doesn't list the channel, you can access the site by clicking the link HERE. [Engadget]

"Panasonic aims to be the number one Green Innovation Company in the Electronics Industry by 2018, the 100th anniversary of our founding," said Naoto Noguchi, President of Energy Company, a unit of Panasonic responsible for the battery cell business.
