FOXCONN TO REPLACE WORKERS WITH 1 MILLION ROBOTS IN 3 YEARS

Taiwanese technology giant Foxconn will replace some of its workers with 1 million robots in three years to cut rising labor expenses and improve efficiency, said Terry Gou, founder and chairman of the company, late Friday.

The robots will be used to do simple and routine work such as spraying, welding and assembling which are now mainly conducted by workers, said Gou at a workers' dance party Friday night.

The company currently has 10,000 robots and the number will be increased to 300,000 next year and 1 million in three years, according to Gou.

Foxconn, the world's largest maker of computer components which assembles products for Apple, Sony and Nokia, is in the spotlight after a string of suicides of workers at its massive Chinese plants, which some blamed on tough working conditions.

The company currently employs 1.2 million people, with about 1 million of them based on the Chinese mainland.

LEAK: FOXCONN TO BUILD AMAZON'S 10.1 TABLET

Foxconn will build Amazon’s rumored 10.1-inch tablet, DigiTimes reported on Thursday. The Android tablet is expected to ship in 2012 according to the report, but Amazon may want to get the device out the door a bit earlier in order to to have it on store shelves in time for the holiday season. A smaller 7-inch version that was built by Quanta computer is already on its way to Amazon and, while other reports suggested it is a 9-inch tablet, that is likely the model we have heard will launch in late August or September.

Amazon will launch a “Coyote” tablet that packs a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra processor, as well as a larger “Hollywood” tablet powered by the new quad-core Kal-El chip. Since Kal-El devices aren’t shipping to consumers yet, it could be a safe bet to guess that Quanta Computer built the Coyote tablet while Foxconn has scored the order for the more powerful Hollywood device.

RUMOR: PLAYSTATION 4 COMING IN 2012

Sony’s manufacturing partners will begin building the consumer electronics giant’s next-generation video game console toward the end of this year, with a launch scheduled for 2012, DigiTimes reports. Details surrounding Sony’s PlayStation 4 are very limited for the time being, but the report states that the new console will feature integrated movement-based controls similar to the Microsoft Kinect controller.

Foxconn and Pegatron, the two manufacturing firms charged with assembling Sony’s PlayStation 3, will build the new console according to DigiTimes’ sources. 2012 shipment volume for the PS4 is said to be at least 20 million units.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 was not expected to launch until 2013 or 2014, but with Nintendo’s Wii U launching next year and Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox due to be unveiled in 2012 as well, it is possible that Sony accelerated the new console’s development in order to remain competitive. Sony’s current PlayStation 3 console has sold more than 51 million units globally since its launch in November 2006.

FOXCONN ASKS WORKERS TO SIGN "NO-SUICIDE" PLEDGE

Foxconn has a problem on their hands. Too many of their workers wind up getting sick or deciding to kill themselves because of the long hours and stressful work involved with manufacturing products they know the world markets demand.

The company has already tried boosting wages to increase employee morale, but now company management has another trick up their sleeves: “no suicide” pledges that every employee has to sign. The wage increases apparently haven’t changed the core working conditions at Foxconn plants in China, and at least 14 workers have committed suicide in the past 16 months.

Foxconn is notable because they manufacture Apple iPads and iPhones, among other Apple products. Employees are not only subject to high demand and a fast-moving assembly line, but also are required to work in utmost secrecy, especially when a new product is beginning a manufacturing run.

That’s not the end of the story, either: the Centre for Research on Multinational Companies and Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour did a study of Foxconn’s facilities and found that the problem was systemic. Workers were forced to work overtime hours, with one employee clocking in over 98 hours of overtime in a single month, and during peak iPad demand workers were only able to take one day off every 13 days. Other workers were forced to stand during their entire 12-hour shifts.

Unfortunately, none of those problems are issues that a signed pledge that a worker won’t kill themselves can actually fix. The pledge itself was a response by management to studies documenting the working conditions at Foxconn’s Chinese plants. Management also claims that while they admit to breaking the overtime laws, they claim it’s voluntary and the employees want to work long hours.

They have also said that some employees commit suicide not because of the working conditions, but because they want to net their surviving families big compensation payments from the company. Management also points to the anti-suicide “nets” that have been put up around the Foxconn dormitory buildings where the employees stay as an example of their desire to protect workers.

A “no suicide” pledge is a far cry from a fix to Foxconn’s problems, and social observers and international human rights groups claim the company isn’t doing enough to spread the workload out across more workers or pay current workers what they’re really worth. Apple’s own investigation noted that Foxconn may be failing to meet Apple’s own supplier code of conduct. Regardless, demand for iPads and iPhones is still high, and with a new iPhone on the horizon, it’s doubtful there’ll be a long term fix to Foxconn’s HR problems in the near future.

FOXCONN REPORTS $218 MILLION LOSS FOR 2010

Foxconn, the manufacturer of a number of popular devices including the iPhone, with a workforce of about 127,000 people, posted a $218.3 million net loss for 2010 yesterday. While the company had previously predicted lower earnings amid suicide-related wage increases and welfare costs, the reported figure still exceeds analysts' estimation of around $202 million, which also far outweighs the net income of $38.6 million.

Foxconn puts the blame on higher consolidated income tax and increased competition, as well as "cost streamlining actions" -- a reference to the ongoing relocation and expansion plans, which are also the outcome of the Chinese suicides -- that took longer than expected and led to increased spending along with higher manufacturing overhead. Looking ahead, Foxconn said in 2011 it'll "take decisive actions to conclude our capacity relocation, optimize our cost structure and return to profitability." Of course, further losses could accelerate plans to increase prices, which could ultimately put everyone in a lose-lose situation if Foxconn can't compete.

RUMOR: iPAD2 COULD BE SMALLER iPAD

We have heard rumors that Apple intends to release the iPad 2 by the end of February. That’s based on reports that Foxconn’s plant is preparing to ship hardware within the next 100 days. But while it has been assumed this is going to be an iPad 2, it may in fact be another model of iPad.

Reuters has heard from manufacturers in Asia that the new iPad expected early next year could be a smaller version of the existing iPad with a few updates.

The news is contradictory though, with talk of a lighter, slimmer iPad also appearing, and new models getting a second camera for Facetime compatibility. We’ve even seen so-called iPad 2 cases that sport additional holes including one for such a camera.

While the details of what exactly Apple has planned for February are unclear, what is becoming apparent is the iPad is going to get some form of new model in a couple of month’s time. Whether it’s smaller, or lighter, or boasts a fantastic new display, is what remains a mystery. [Geek]

RUMOR: iPAD2 TO SHIP FROM FOXCONN FEBRUARY; APRIL LAUNCH

DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has informed Foxconn the iPad2 will begin shipping in February with an April launch to consumers. The iPad2 is the update to the hugely popular iPad tablet computer. The update should included a new docking slot and a front-facing camera.

The timing for the new iPad would be about right for Apple's product cycle. The original iPad was announced in January and was available to consumers in May. Apple may want to put a few months distance between the iPad cycle and the iPhone which traditionally launches in June.
