RUMOR: APPLE'S MACBOOK PROS TO LOSE OPTICAL DRIVE; GAIN SSD AND LIGHT PEAK

According to the three guys over at the Three Guys and a Podcast podcast, April 2011 will see a significant refresh of the Intel’s Light Peak technology.

Light Peak is the real, super exciting addition here: it’s basically a super high-speed data technology that not only outperforms USB 3.0, but also replaces all the other various cables you use in a computer, like HDMI to SATA.

According to the eponymous Three Guys, Apple is going to ditch optical drives across the board, which makes a lot of sense: Apple’s new business is pushing content digitally, whether media or software. Need to read a CD or DVD? You’ll need to buy an external drive. If you’re unwilling to part with a DVD burner, Apple is expected to keep a legacy MBP around to appease you, but expect even that to go the way of the dodo in a generation: Apple’s embracing the future, and that means embracing digital delivery as well as ultimate mobility.
