GOWALLA SOLD TO FACEBOOK
Facebook has acquired location sharing service Gowalla for an undisclosed sum, according to a source close to Gowalla. Facebook declined to comment on the deal. "We don't comment on rumor and speculation," a company spokesman said.
Launched in 2009, Austin-based Gowalla went head-to-head with direct rival Foursquare -- and lost. Badly trailing Foursquare in user adoption, Gowalla recently shifted directions, recasting itself as a travel guide.

RIM TO INCLUDE FOURSQUARE SUPPORT TO BBM
During the BlackBerry World Keynote in Orlando this morning, Research In Motion announced that it is working with foursquare to include support for the social-network in an upcoming version of BlackBerry Messenger.
Users will be able to share their location information as their BBM status, but RIM execs didn’t go into much detail on how check-ins will work or just how feature rich the implementation will be. The native foursquare client, for example, allows users to find nearby deals, compete with friends for check-in points, and more.
RIM did not say when the client would make its debut, although we suspect it will be around the launch of its BlackBerry 7 powered Bold 9900, which will occur later this summer.

FOURSQUARE 3.0 LAUNCHES
Via a blog post today, foursquarefounder Dennis Crowley announced an updated version of his company’s software that will be available to users “late tonight.” Reminiscing about his company’s past, present, and future, Crowley admits that he and his team have not been able to “expand the foursquare experience as much as they hoped to” over the last year. But that all changes today.
Focusing on discovery, encouragement, and loyalty, foursquare will deploy several new features to its iPhone and Android applications (version number 3.0). Through a new “Explore” tab, users can input what it is they are looking for, getting recommendations from 4sq based on what’s around and where friends have visited. The company will try to encourage users to continue to explore their world with a revamped leader board. “You’ll see that we’ve replaced our old leader board (and its simple points system and Sunday night reset) with a sliding 7-day barometer of you and your friends,” writes Crowley. “Check-ins now trigger points for dozens of different types of actions.”
Loyalty will be addressed by offering merchants additional ways to reward “swarms, groups of friends, regulars, newbies, or everyone.” Merchants will gain access to the new controls later this week. In closing, Crowley writes, “we’ve got really ambitious plans for the rest of the year and we’re excited to let you play with three big new pieces of the master plan.”
Foursquare notes that an updated BlackBerry client is due out later this week — though it will not include many 3.0′s features — and that it is “working hard” on its Windows Phone and Symbian apps.

GOWALLA INTEGRATES RIVALS FOURSQUARE AND FACEBOOK
Gowalla with its newly updated iOS application hopes to keep users immersed by removing the need to switch apps if they choose to check-in with multiple services. Gowalla 3.0 allows users to irritate their friends like never before by allowing them to check into Gowalla, Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr simultaneously. Other additions in version 3 include better Retina Display support, a tweaked UI and bookmark support for visited places. Gowalla might not be the biggest LBS in the bunch, but by unifying the check-in process it hopes to become a one-stop shop that will simplify check-ins for active users. [BGR]

FOURSQUARE TO ALLOW BUSINESSES TO BOOT MAYORS
Foursquare has given verified businesses the ability to oust mayors they believe to be fake and the check-ins fraudulent. When the business gives the mayor the boot, the next in line automatically becomes mayor.
A Foursquare spokesperson stated "esterday we gave verified business owners the ability to oust a Mayor if they have reason to believe the Mayorship was not gained through legitimate check-ins. If a Mayor is flagged by a business owner, they’ll be removed from office immediately and the next user in line will take over as Mayor.
We’re still in the very early stages of experimenting with this feature and will most likely be tweaking it based on feedback from business owners."

Along with To-Do, Foursquare is launching a set of "Add to My Foursquare" buttons websites can place in their articles and readers can click on the button and have the place the article is referring to added to their To-Do list. Facebook launches Places
Facebook has announced they are launching a Foursquare competitor called Places. Places is designed for three things, to help you see where you are, help you see who's around and help you see what's going on nearby.
You can check in to your location and tag your friends with you. Places will automatically check you in and create a news feed story showing where you are. Facebook has also created an API for access to Places and Gowalla is the first partner to use it. Rumor has it Foursquare and Yelp are also interested in using the API.
Places is available now for the iPhone, via an application update, and in Facebook's mobile website for advanced mobile devices
