APPLE TIME CAPSULE UPDATE UNVEILED; STORAGE INCREASED TO 3TB

It's been a good long while since Apple unveiled a new Time Capsule, almost two years since the 2TB model rolled out. At the time that was a volume of storage that you couldn't possibly fill up -- even if you ripped your entire Peter Gabriel collection in lossless. Now, nearly 24 months later, you're out of room for the latest Greatest Hits compilations, never mind Scratch My Back and the subsequent buddy album. Now Apple has your back, releasing an updated Time Capsule offering up to 3TB of storage

RUMOR: iOS 5 TO BE OVER THE AIR UPDATE, AT LEAST FOR VERIZON CUSTOMERS

9to5Mac has multiple sources informing it that Apple and Verizon are scheming to start delivering iOS updates over the air from this fall, or just as soon as iOS 5 is made available. Untethered OS updates are a familiar feature to users of other smartphone operating systems and even the iOS-infused Apple TV, but getting Apple's mobile devices up to date has so far always required going through the company's own cable and software.

There's no reason to believe this wireless update feature will be limited to Verizon, mind you -- that's just where the informants are coming from in this instance -- though Apple will almost certainly have to alter the file sizes of its updates. We can't think of many carriers who'll be happy to push more than half a gigabyte of data per user per update. Additionally, since iTunes currently acts as the major backup hub, 9to5Macspeculates Cupertino must be working on a cloud backup service as well, which would seem a very sensible idea.

AVG LAUNCHES COMPETITOR TO DROPBOX

AVG launched an online storage, backup and syncing service named LiveKive. LiveKive is a serious competitor to the granddaddy of online services DropBox. AVG describes LiveKive as a "reliable and sophisticated alternative to archiving.” In reality it’s a service that allows you to store any and all files in the cloud while keeping a local copy synchronized on your device, be that a Windows or Mac PC, or some portable device running Android or iOS.

LiveKive not only lets you backup and sync files across multiple computers, it also allows you to share files securely with others just like Dropbox’s Public folder. AVG calls its version a Share Room and rather than sharing download links you share a room link, with the recipient being able to download anything you put in that room.

here’s a free 5GB account available to everyone as well as two paid tiers. The first is $49.99 a year and gets you 25GB of storage. The second is $79.99 per year and comes with unlimited storage. Checking the fair use policy confirms that unlimited actually means 500GB, and that this estimate of an upper limit could be revised at any time.
