It's hard to believe that it was ten years ago today that Windows XP first hit retail shelves. It's even more astonishing when you realize that it was still the most popular operating system in the world until the beginning of this month. The sun may finally be setting on the stalwart OS that has powered countless home and business PCs (it crossed the 400 million mark way back in 2006), but it's still number two -- right behind it's youngest brother Windows 7 and well ahead of the black sheep, Vista. Sure, our relationship with Microsoft's OS has had its ups and downs, but it's clear we've developed an attachment to the ol' bird. After all, consumer demand kept it shipping on PCs until late 2010 and Redmond has pledged to support it until April 8th of 2014.

One year ago I started this blog and had no idea what I was doing nor what to expect. The past year has been very interesting. There have been a number of times I thought about not posting for a day or quitting all together, but it seems every time I would think about that we would get a new twitter follower, or our page views would increase. I realize there are a lot of tech sites out there and I want to thank each of you for your continued support.

MS-DOS TURNS 30

Thirty years ago DOS officially came into being. On July 27, 1981, Microsoft acquired the disk operating system software from Seattle Computer Products (SCP). The company then promptly renamed it MS-DOS and kickstarted a rise that eventually led to Microsoft's near-monopoly of computing for more than two decades.

SCP made CPU cards. In 1980, the company needed an OS to run on an Intel 8086, an early 16-bit microprocessor processor. It developed what it originally referred to as QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System). QDOS evolved into 86-DOS. Microsoft initially acquired a license from SCP to use on hardware being developed by IBM that would become the IBM PC. Microsoft eventually decided the platform was important enough to buy the rights to 86-DOS and renamed it MS-DOS.

The OS ended up surviving largely intact after Windows arrived up until Windows XP, when the OS was no longer running in pure form either on home or work desktops. Windows 7 users can still find its interface in a command prompt.

RUMOR: SOMETHING BIG COMING FOR APPLE'S 10TH RETAIL ANNIVERSARY

An Apple source is stating Apple is gearing up for a big event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its retail stores next Monday. According to the source:

• There’s an overnight shift planned for around 10-15 individuals at each Apple Store to work from late Saturday all the way through mid-Sunday.
• During the overnight shift, it’s going to be required that employees lock cell phones in the main office. They will also have to sign an NDA with Apple.
• There are a wide variety of roles, we’re told, for the overnight shift. This includes all visuals staff, a manager, a business team member, a few Genius team members, one back-of-house employee, and a few generic Apple specialists.
• Apple stores have apparently already received hardware to install, and are expecting more hardware to come on Friday or Saturday. All materials that Apple stores have received have been instructed to be under lock and key until after close on Saturday night.
• Apple employees will be putting up black curtains at all stores so that people walking outside cannot see inside.
• Employees have had to download gigabytes of data from Apple corporate labeled, “training” in a password-protected zipped folder that won’t accessible to managers or anyone else until Saturday afternoon.
• Lastly, all Apple retail stores have mandatory meetings on Sunday, May 22nd. Most meeting are scheduled for the morning, but there are evening meetings as well.
